The method of the three ways (purification, illumination, union) has the remote and immediate preparation, and the same thanksgiving as the other methods. In this method the soul will dwell longer upon that part which responds more to its present needs.

A) IN THE FIRST PART, the soul applies the three faculties to the purification of its general and particular faults, making sure that in various days it will cover all of its personal obligations, its activities and relations with others, etc .... The soul will make sure to listen, remember and humbly develop the reproach and the internal admonition that Jesus and the Spirit will place in it. A true self examination trial!

B) IN THE SECOND PART, the soul applies the three faculties to loving contemplation in the light of faith, of divine perfections and operations, of the acts and status of the incarnate Word, of the virtues and merits of Mary, and of the saints. The soul will try its best to come out of itself with the longing to be totally taken and elevated in contemplation.

C) IN THE THIRD PART, the soul applies all its being to the union with the humanity of Jesus, and through it with the divinity; in the divinity, the soul relates to the individual persons, trying to be totally united in the relation whereby each person is for the other. The soul brings to this union all its faculties and all its actions, so that they may remain united to the divine perfections, and may apply themselves to cooperation with the Lord, in each act and state.
